QuestionHi, you recently answered a quesino about Blue roses. I have to admit, this sounds like you are pulling my leg. I don't know anything about Blue roses. But I did look at your answer and sure enough, there was a lot of good info. So I am gonig to be the first to follow-up with a q about the brown roses. I assume you don't mean they are dead? I also have not seen any.
AnswerBelieve it or not, there are websites and catalogs devoted to Brown Roses. They come in all shapes and sizes. Paul Barden (www.rdrop.com/~paul/brownroses3.html) is one. The Uncommon Rose(www.uncommonrose.com) is a major retailer in that niche. I have purchased several items from them including their Brownest of Brown roses, a hybrid named Teddy Bear (uncommonrose.biz/r/teddybear.html).
I have not yet grown Black Jade (uncommonrose.biz/r/blackjade.html), a very dark red that some say is the closest thing to a black Rose you will ever see. Just not my cup of tea.
There have been many brown/russet Roses developed outside of the U.S. You see them around certain holidays -- Secretary's Day is the big one around here, vendors pushing all kinds of intriguing, beautiful colors of Roses we rarely see. I saw my first Brown Rose in a Secretary's Bouquet, purchased by her boss from a street vendor on Wall Street in lower Manhattan, and I could not wait to grow it. Trouble is, they are still not bringing it into this Country. Not legally, anyway.
So yes, there are Brown Roses. The best ones are in Oz. Or, should I say, the best are yet to come.
Thanks for writing.
