Question -
The location is southern california, I have had roses for 30 years growing beautifully. This year after the cut back (pruning) in December or January, it is now June several of the rose bushes have developed shrinking leaves and dead wood with no flowers at all, some have also died. I have probably 50 bushes what can I do to prevent all of them catching whatever it is. Only a very few have normal leaves and flowers.

Hi Rosemary-
I need more information. Are the roses Antique roses or Hybrid Teas? Also - have you fertilized them, and what is your watering schedule? With the info you gave me - I would water them more frequently if you haven't watered, and cease all fertilization. It sounds like they may have gotten too much chemical fertilizer with not enough water, but again with not enough info it is hard to say.
Thanks,
Carlene
AnswerHi Rosemary-
Yes - please water them at least twice a week. If you use a sprinkler - water for at least 30-45 minutes twice a week for about 2 to 3 weeks, then once a week thereafter. Hopefully they can be saved. What type of fertilizer do you use? Miracle Grow has killed many of my roses because it is artifical, too concentrated, and my area is very hot, and if there isn't enough water my roses end up in the rose graveyard. I like time-release fertilizer, manure or fish emulsion better. It is much safer is a very warm climate.
Good luck-
Carlene
