QuestionHi Carlene,
You said you know the best types of roses to grow in Houston. Please tell me what type(s) grow best. Thanks, Natalie
AnswerHi Natalie-
Because of the high heat and humidity, a lot of the hybrid tea roses don't do the best unless you have the time to spray them once a week with a herbicide and fungicide. If you don't mind doing that - well then go ahead and buy them. I myself like the EarthKind roses (check out the Texas A&M website - do a search under EarthKind roses).
Some of the roses I recommend you can get off the Antique Rose Emporium or Chamblees roses website:
Belinda's Dream
Knockout
Mrs. B.R. Cant
Mrs. Dudley Cross
Georgetown Tea
Madmoiselle Franziska Kruger
Duchesse de Brabant
Spice
Mrs. Joseph Schwartz
Buff Beauty
Penelope
Recommended English Roses:
L.D. Braithwaite
Graham Thomas
Judas the Obscure
Molineaux
Recommended Hybrid Teas, Florabundas and Grandifloras commonly available at Walmart, Garden Centers or Jackson & Perkins website:
Veterans Honor
Gold Medal
Iceberg
Gene Boerner
Granada
Chrysler Imperial
Queen Elizabeth
Don Juan (climber)
Jeanne LaJoie (miniature climber)
I have grown dozens of roses and the above roses are the lowest maintenance and healthiest roses I have grown.
Good luck-
Carlene
