QuestionI have a real problem, but I'm not sure if it is a rose borer or not, and maybe it doesn't make any difference as the results are the same.
If I don't seal the ends of roses with every cut I make they get a borer of some kind which kills the whole stem.
I have opened the stem and it looks like a little black bee or wasp (about 1/4 inch, perhaps a bit more). If cut into they have bright yellow insides (I found this out by accident).
I've tried sealing the ends with wood glue, wood putty, and shellac and try to seal the stems every time, but still most of my roses are down to two or so stems. What would you do?
Thank you for your help.
Answerif i was sure it was borers, i'd buy orthenex and spray the plants. it is a systemic disease(fungicide) and pest control pesticide.
for now, start by taking a sample of the effected area and putting it in a clear plastic bag and sealing it. visit a local garden center/nursery and ask them to advise you. see what they recommend for your area. buy products from them & they should be glad to help you plan your solution. buy an inexpensive book(sunset, ortho, etc.) on rose care at your local garden center. quiz them on rose care in your area while there.
for now.
good luck
