patented Coco Red...

Question
I am a fellow expert here and from time to time I get to utilize a benefit from volunteering here along with you. I am in the flooring section. My question is in regards to my Coco Red rose. I was dead heading today as Winter is fast heading my way. I noticed that the spent blossom had a hard green dime size bulb that I am wondering about....what is it? How are new roses grown? Is that a seed. I wondered how or what makes a new rose? Take your time I know how busy it can get doing this sometimes. Thanks in advance...

Perry

Answer
Hi Perry...........yes, that is a "seed" head.  If you don't deadhead roses this rosehip forms.  And, yes, roses can be grown from seed, but that process is a little more time consuming.
The best way to mulitiply what you have is to take a "cutting", about 6 to 8 inches long (cut right at the point where a stem joins the bush itself.  Insert into a five gallon pot of organic humus (or rich compost/potting soil) keep moist and roots should form within eight weeks.
A plant rooted like this takes about one year to be sturdy enough to be planted in a rose bed.
