QuestionHello
I live in France and want to graft some roses. I cannot find grafting material on sale - which varieties of roses are suitable for using as graft hosts? Can I use ordinary dog rose which grows in the hedges here?
AnswerHello Janet-
Yes, you can use the dog rose for understock. Any kind of wild rose that grows naturally in your area I think would be an excellent choice.
I know in the United States two types of roses that are popular for understock are Dr. Huey and Fortuniana. There are mail order supply houses for these roses too - check on Helpmefindroses.com.
Good luck with your endeavors!
