roses&limestone

Question
When you planting roses,by putting some limestone under them, they will grow better.True or not.Thank you for your answer.

Answer
Roses like the soil to be on the acid side. If the soil in the garden is very acid then once a year in the early spring when the rains will wash it in, you can sprinkle a little limestone around the base of the rose to sweeten the soil but never near the roots. Limestone on rose roots makes the leaves go a sickly, greeny yellow, plus the plant will be stunted. You do put a cup of bone meal in the planting hole so perhaps that is what they meant. Lynnette
