Preparing roses for winter; vigorous climbers

Question
Greetings.

I have several varieties of dwarf roses that are currently planted in above-ground plastic pots, 1 per pot except for my Eleanor/Pink Lady, they are planted 2 in a pot.

Anyway, how do I winterize these plants? I can't bring them inside, but I'm afraid of them suffering damage over the winter.

On a different note, I also have 2 (wild) climbing roses, both of which are rather....vigorous. With no exaggeration, one stem has reached 8 ft tall. Neither bush will bloom, only send out tons of leaves and stems. How do I prune them, and get them to flower? One climbs vertically, the other horizontally.

Many thanks,
Amanda

Answer
Hi Amanda.........As far as winterizing roses there are two options.  If you have a basement they do exceptionally well there.....just make sure you water when they dry out.  If not, then you can use the double-black-trash bag (or some other) simple way of insulating the pot/root system.  They main thing to protect is the root system during the cold/freeze.

The two wild climbing roses........do you feed them?
Prune back the stems that cross or are dead.  Feeding will promote the blooms.  (pruning climbing roses is not mandatory, especially if you are training them over a structure)
Hope this helps you "get prepared" for winter.....
