Question
I would like information on the planting time and depth for Moss Roses. I live in Washington state and our climate runs from very hot in the summer (100 degrees)to a winter temperature of of possibly 0 degrees.

Answer
Fall is the best time in your area to plant a Moss rose. Even though it may be cold outside, this doesn't stop the roots from growing. One of the reasons roses don't do well when planted in the spring, is because the roots don't have time to grow and support a large amount of top growth. When a rose is planted in the fall, roots continue to grow well into the fall and also the early spring. This means they have enough feeder roots to supply nutrients to the top no matter what the size becomes. Moss roses tend to suffer from mildew when their roots get too warm. Planting a Moss rose with the graft well below the soil level and then placing a thick 6 inch mulch of anything you can get in your area will make sure their roots are cool and damp. Also when the temperature is really hot, just make sure you water daily. Hope this helps. Lynnette
