NO FOLIAGE ON MY ROSES

Question
i AM IN NE TEXAS WITH CLAY SOIL AND MY ROSES ARE DROPPING ALL THEIR LEAVES. THEY BLOOM QUITE WELL BUT NO LEAVES ON SOME AND FEW ON OTHERS.  THEY DO GET WATERED AND FERTILIZED REGULARLY AND SOME WATER EVERY DAY FROM THE SPRINKLERS.  WE HAVE MULCH AROUNMD THE PLANTS AND USE MIRACLE GROW SPRINKLE TO FERTILIZE.

Answer
When roses get too hot, they conserve water by getting rid first of the leaves that hold it and finally the canes. This gives the roots a chance to survive. Also sometimes fertilizing with chemical fertilizers when the temperature is hot can cause the leaves to drop as it burns. That can be seen if the tips of the leaves are dried out or look like they are burnt. The fact that they bloom well is a good sign so you won't lose them. It also could be not enough water. Dig down and see if the water has penetrated to a depth of at least 6 inches, preferably more. The main thing roses need in hot weather is water, water, water. However with your clay soil you could be lucky in that it holds the moisture in. You could also be unlucky in that the clay tends to bake. Anyway dig down beside the rose bush to check. Hope this helps. Lynnette
