QuestionLast spring as a gift at our infant daughter's funeral we received a baby love rose in the black pot from the green house as a gift. we potted it in a plastic outdoor planter and it did well. through the winter we kept it in the garage and out of the weather where it stayed green and healthy. since we have moved it back into the sun, it has dried out and i am afraid that it is dead. i recently replanted with miracle gro potting soil and have been watering diligently. it sits in a spot where it has morning/afternoon sun in 80-95 degree weather. Is there anything I can do to help this special rose?
AnswerMini roses are more delicate that the bigger ones. They are not grafted but grown on their own roots so there is a chance it will come back. Try the following.
Cut it right back to about 2 inches as the dead canes will dry out any new growth.
Take it out of the afternoon sun as it will burn the frail leaves. Place it where it will get all the morning sun and the last rays of the evening sun. It needs about 6 hours of full but not hot sun.
Water it well and then let it dry out before watering it again as constant watering will keep the roots too wet and can sufocate the tiny hairlike feeder roots.
Roses just love cool roots, so place some sort of mulch on the top of the soil to give the plant that condition.
The reason your rose died back was because the foliage that grew in the garage was frail and thin so the hot sun burnt it. It is a myth that roses like to be in full sun all day. They love the morning and the late afternoon sun, not the hot overhead sun. Hope this helps Lynnette
