QuestionHello Lynnette, Are you familiar with leaf cutter bees? I am and understand their benefits as well as their destructiveness. What I am having trouble finding is the best way to be rid of them. I do know that netting is one solution. Perhaps you know of an alternative home remedy spray or something similar to put on my Joseph's Coat and Fourth of July climbing roses? Any leads would be appreciated. Thank you for your time, Lynnette. Bj
AnswerHere is a good way to view the cutter bees. First of all they are all females who do the damage. The mother bee cuts the same sized half ovals every time, usually from the same favourite rose, to make a baby blanket for it's young. The babies are made cosy with the rose leaf plus it also smells nice. Sort of a rose scented nursery. Taking part of the leaf will not damage the rose at all, it justs makes the bush look unsigthly. So try to image hundreds of mother bees flying back and forth making rose scented baby blankets. Still want to do somthing about them! LOL
You can't stop them Bj short of using an insecticide to kill them and then you will not only kill the good cutter bees but many other beneficial insects too. I would use a thin gauze material as the bees only last a few weeks. Lynnette
