QuestionI am in zone 5b.
I have an Intrigue rose which I planted too close to the wall (about 6 inches). It is very sparse, with only a couple of canes about 18 inches high. I want to move it out from the wall another 18 inches. It has just finished blooming.
How should I do this? Can it be pruned back to possibly rebloom later this summer?
Thank you for your help.
AnswerThe best time to move a rose is when it is dormant, such as early spring or late fall. This is when it will survive the best. However if you want to move it now you will have to trick it into going dormant and you do that by cutting all the leaves off. Then prune it back by a half as you cannot help damaging the frail feeder roots when you dig it up.
Have the new hole ready and make sure you water, water water, even when the plant looks droopy. Moving it at this time will probably set it back a few months but it should survive. Hope this helps. Lynnette
