QuestionI am in Pittsburgh, Pa, Zone 5. I have a walled courtyard with raised brick beds. Last year I bought two climbing Peace roses which had some blooms on them. They never flowered again after being planted.
The garden supply place told me that sometimes they have to settle in. I fed them last summer with Rosetone, which is an organic fertilizer.
They came back with new canes this year but, again, no buds or blooms. I gave them some Epsom salts. A few weeks ago I fed them with another rose specific fertilizer. I have new foliage but no buds. I have two rugosa bushes 8 feet away in the same planters and they are going gangbusters.
Any suggestions or explanation? I would really appreciate any help. I picked Peace for sentimental reasons and because the courtyard is off my bedroom which is decorated with yellow and pink. It seemed the perfect match and I was thrilled to find the climbing Peace bushes. A neighbor has great success with the climbing roses in her courtyard but hers are in the ground and not a raised planter. Could that be the problem? Thank you for taking your time to do this.
AnswerYour planter is not to blame for the lack of flowers on the climber, and you are doing everything right. Climbing Peace is known for not giving you any flowers for the first 5 or 6 years. This is a very vigorus climber and uses all it's energy up making canes. Even when it has settled in you will only get one small, main flush of flowers. I wish I could be more positive about climbing Peace but what I usually tell people is to replace it with a climber that will give them more pleasure plus more flowers.
Hope this helps. Lynnette
