QuestionDear Margarett, I live in south west france and would like to plant a Kew Rambler rose to grow up a tree close to where we sit out - I particularly want a rose there with a good strong scent. However, I have read totally different reports on the scent of this rose - from none to 'heavily scented'. Whilst I appreciate scent/perfume is a personal experience, I would appreciate any comments you have. Many thanks. Judy
AnswerHi, Judy--unfortunately, I'm not familiar with that particular rose, but I can tell you that scent is a very subjective thing, hence the varying reports. If you can contact some of the public gardens near you, you may be able to "visit " a specimen of the Kew Rambler. You might also check with the World Federation of Rose Societies to see if anyone near you grows this rose. Go to www.worldroses.org, and click on the contact for the country(ies) you wish to search. Another site that may be of help is www.findmyroses.com. This site will tell you where the rose is available for purchase.
One of the best-smelling roses I have grown is the thornless 'Zephirine Drouhin', a bourbon rose that grows like a climber. It blooms in big flushes, with some repeat in between the big spring and fall bloom cycles. It smells very "old rose" to me. The english (Austin) rose 'Abraham Darby' is another good one.
Hope this helps, and let me know if you have more questions!
