Own Root Roses

Question
Live in southern Wi. (Racine)

Question---Because of freeze out, I'am thinking about replacing some of my killed roses with "own root" types. Been told by some that I'am wasting my money. ....."You'll keep getting roses but they'll be small shoots after a few years" What do you think? Can you plant exceptionally deep to help out?  Thank You,

Sincerely,
Tom Betchkal

Thinking of replanting with "Voodoo". Is this a tougher rose than "Peace"?.... Like 'em both.

Answer
Hi, Tom--to answer your second question first, Peace has been tougher and a better grower for me than Voodoo.  Now, for the own root roses--start with some that come potted--I think Heritage still does these.  With good feeding and pruning practices, they should do well.  Small shoots on any rose result from not pruning down far enough or often enough.

Check out the Old Garden Rose and other rose forums on GardenWeb.com--lots of friendly folks there who will steer you in the right direction.  Look at the American Rose Society site also--listings for local rose societies and Consulting Rosarians whose help is free.  If I can be of further help, you can always contact me here!
