Starting Roses in the Spring

Question
I have kept my roses in a cool, dark spot all winter in my basement, some of them are starting to grow branches, what is my next step?  They are in containers and since I am in Alaska I have a couple of months before I can even start to think about putting them outside.  I bought them last year. Thanks

Answer
Hi, Dixie--I'm sorry to be so long getting to your question--I have been without computer access for two weeks!
If you can put them under flourescent light for about 13 hours a day, you can go ahead and start your feeding and watering schedule.  If not, water them about every two weeks.  When you do put them outside, watch the new shoots to see if they green up.  If not, just trim them back again--there are lots of additional bud eyes around the shoot which will produce if the first shoots have to be trimmed off.

You may want to visit the American Rose Society site at www.ars.org for more information, as well as listings for societies and Consulting Rosarians who may be in your area.  There are lots of friendly folks on the rose forums at GardenWeb.com, and you can also reach me here!
