QuestionThanks for taking my question, Gill. I live in south central Kansas, and I have an area on the south side of my house where I currently have a row of Wine & Roses Weigelas planted. I planted them there in April. Anyway, these Weigelas are getting scorched, so I am considering trying something else there. Whatever I plant on this side of my house will get full sun from sunrise until about 6:00 P.M. They will also get the radiated heat from the house and a lot of wind. In addition to this, SC Kansas gets a great deal of drought. So...the shrubs I am interested in need to be heat, sun, and drought tolerant and also be hardy to zone 6b (my zone). Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Tim
AnswerHello Tim
The damage has probably been caused mostly by the wind and that is going to be a constant problem with any plant. Lavender and rosemary both like to be baked and are drought tolerant. However, this does not mean they can go without water completely and in particularly hot, dry weather would need to be watered. Of course there are any number of succulents which could tolerate the conditions you describe - a visit to your local garden center to see what is available in your area may be your best move.
