Falling lemons

Question
I have a Meyer lemon about 10 years old and about 10 feet tall. It produces lots of good fruit. This summer, a lot of lemons have been falling from the tree. The fruit is good and not over ripe. It has never done this before. Can you tell me why the fruit is dropping?

Answer
Hello Carl

Citrus trees are not actually within my area of expertise, but as we don't have an 'Expert' in this field at present, I can make a suggestion - As your lemon tree has consistently produced good fruit - even this year - I don't think anything too drastic is happening.  If the fallen fruit is ripe and shows no signs of damage (i.e splitting, or rotting at the end that was attached to the tree), it could be that rainfall has been inconsistent this year, as this is the most usual reason for fruit drop.

You can, if you wish, go to the heading 'Fruit' on our main menu and read answers from the last expert on the subject.  There are many answers to questions regarding lemon trees.
