viburnum, leaf browning

Question
viburnum
viburnum
hello
I have a newly planted Viburnum (not sure the variety, but I can found out if that would help)
Purchased from a reputable nursery and has been in the ground about 1 month.  The soil is rocky, but the hole was amended well before planting.
I live in western Washington (Olympia). I noticed after one dry day it was very droopy so I watered well, and it came back --- and kept it well watered since
Now today I just noticed these leaves turning brown. Clearly not well. Any idea of the cause and remedy?  Thank You

Answer
Hello Juli

This looks something like leaf-scorch. There are a couple of things that can cause it - very hot sun, especially if the leaves are wet; strong wind - whether it is a hot wind or a cold wind makes no difference.

When you water be sure that the water falls on the soil around the plant and avoid the leaves as much as possible.

There's not much you can do about the wind though.

Judging by the picture, the browning of the leaves doesn't seem to be wide-spread and at this point I wouldn't think your plant is in any danger and it should continue to grow happily.

However, if the problem becomes substantially worse quickly I'd suggest that you contact our 'Pests & Diseases' Expert.  You'll find this listed on the main gardening menu.

I hope the problem is minor and clears soon.
