Transplanting Older Spirea

Question
I'm thinking about transplanting some bridal wreath spirea that are probably 75 to 85 years old.  How long do they normally live?  I don't want to go to the time and trouble if they are at the end of their lives.  They are located in Iowa.
Thank you.

Answer
Hello Steve

75-85 years old - I'm impressed!  I don't know how long these plants live - a lot depends on your the climate, how well they have been cared for...  Usually they deteriorate over time, although sometimes a good pruning will revive them.

Before considering transplanting them take a look at the spread of the individual plants.  The roots will have spread about the same distance.  Believe me the root ball will be amazingly heavy! Unless moving the plants is a major consideration because they are in the wrong place, I'd leave them alone!
