QuestionWe planted 2 red clusterberry shrubs side by side, 5 weeks ago. They were doing very well until this last week when the leaves of one of them started turning brown. We are in Mesquite, NV (high desert) and the temperatures at night have dropped to the 40's. What do you recommend? Too much water, not enough water? They were fertilized once with Miracle Gro.
AnswerDear Darlene,
Howdy,I'm Coach Dave and I work for The Home Depot in California and I think I can help answer your questions.
Your Red Clusterberry shrubs sound like "Rockspray" or "Cranberry Cotoneaster. The leaves dropping and turning brown sound like scale,Spot fungus, or Fireblight might be the problem. In any case trimming off the problem areas and treating with a fungicide/miticide will solve your problem.
If your watering at least once a week your doing a fine job.
As for "Miracle Gro", well this is not the correct type of fertilizer for Cotoneaster. Try using a slow release evergreen fertilizer. If you fertilize once in summer and once in spring this will make for a healthy shrub.
If you have anymore questions let me know, I'm glad to help.
Yours Respectfully,
Coach Dave
