QuestionI love my wisteria, it blooms three times a year. We have a home in palm dessert and would like to replace the bolganvia with the wisteria. Will the wisteria require more attention or are they about the same maintenance?
AnswerHello Maggie
Wow - lucky you - a Wisteria that blooms 3 times in one year!
It does usually need a little more attention than a Bougainvillea (I think this is what you mean by boganvia?).
All the books will tell you that Wisteria needs pruning twice a year:
In August after the first flowering is over the side shoots should be shortened to 4 buds and then in February the following year the shoots should be shortened again to 2 buds.
I certainly do this with my own Wisteria, but if your plant flowers happily 3 times a year - keep doing whatever it is you're doing!!
