wild wisteria

Question
We have a 2000 sq foot area in the back of our yard  covered with wild wisteria vines.
Aside from the fact that the wisteria never blooms, they are spreading into the cultivated area of our yard and close to one of our out buildings.
We don抰 want to use burn out or another poison and have been told that if a back hoe tries to dig it up,
we are likely to lose some of the large beautiful trees nearby.
Right now, we are weed wacking them down every few weeks, but they seem to flourish with these prunings.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks

Answer
Hello Jamie

If you don't want to use a weed killer and can't dig up the roots, the next best thing to do is smother them.

To do this cut them down as you have been doing and then cover the area with black landscaping material - or anything else you can find which will exclude light.  In the short term this should weaken the plants and make it easier to dig at least some of them out and in the long term it will kill them off, but it could take some time!

As this is such a big area to clear, personally I would go with the weed killer!!
