allspice carolina/calycanthus floridus

Question
I have an allspice carolina, it has bloomed two years now and it is supposed to smell beautiful.  Mine does not smell at all, does anyone know why?

Answer
Hello Ellen

You're right, this plant is supposed to have a lovely fragrance!

Two thoughts - are you sure that it is in fact a Calycanthus floridus?  It has been known for garden centers to mislabel plants!  (I've had it happen to me!).

Calycanthus likes to be in a sunny or partially shaded spot (if it is in a very hot climate) - is yours in too much shade?  Lack of sun could discourage that lovely scent.

I can think of no organic reason for there being no fragrance!

Gill
