QuestionQUESTION: I read your answer in regards to transplanting a burning bush in spring before plant starts to grow. Could it be transplanted in the fall when leaves have fallen off?

ANSWER: Hello Barbara
In a word - Yes! October is a really good time to do this, as the earth is still warm from the summer and the plant will settle in before the really cold weather begins.

QUESTION: My husband would like to transplant it now as he is taking out a pine tree and would like to put it where that is. The burning bush is about 5 feet tall now. Would it die if we did that?
Thank you so much for your answer to fall planting.

AnswerHello again Barbara
Yes, your husband can certainly transplant the Burning Bush now.
As he is planning to replant in an area where another plant has been removed he should build up the nutrient level of the soil by putting granular feed and well rotted compost into the bottom of the hole and working it in with a garden fork. He could also add granular feed to the soil to be used as backfill.
Finally, he should water in the plant really well, leaving a hose running into a depression made around the plant about 18 inches from its base, for about 20 minutes.
Make sure that the plant is watered in dry spells during the current growing season. It should be able to take care of itself next year.
