Question
Evergreen Shrub
Hello Gill Borchardt, thank you very much for reviewing my question. Please assist me with a recent concern I have. There is what I believe to be an Evergreen Shrub which is about 8 - 10 years old. It is situated on the borderline of my neighbors' property. He has recently planted two Apovades (not really sure of the correct spelling) in the orange locations I marked on the attached picture. These replace a recently fallen tree that was about 25 years old. My question is, can digging in this location cause any problems for the existing shrub? And is there any signs I should look for, or extra care I should do in order to make sure it remains healthy with no problems? Thank you again.
AnswerHello Al
The evergreen, which appears to be a conifer, looks healthy and sturdy, so as the two shrubs that your neighbor has planted look to be quite small and some distance from the evergreen, there shouldn't be a problem.
In fact, it is the new plants which could have a problem as they will be competing with a much larger and well established tree for moisture and nutrients! If your neighbor asks (or if you want to be 'neighborly'), you could suggest to him that his new plants will need extra moisture, feeding and a good mulching, especially in their first year, to ensure that they get as good a start as possible in the garden.
Hope this puts your mind at rest.
Gill
