Identifying a shrub

Question
Hello Gill,
Tom Alonzo suggested that I refer this question to you.I had a shrub which died during the winter. When I bought it, about 3 years ago, I was told it would grow to about 2 meters in height and width. It had needle type leaves as in a fir and red flowers in the summer which resembled raspberries. I attempted to buy another from the same garden center but they had no idea what it was.
Tom suggested an English yew but it's leaves are flat and it has berries. Hope you can help
Diana

Answer
Hello Diana

It is usually very difficult to identify a plant from a written description, but - I think what you had was a female Juniper.  I can't tell you which variety is was as there are 50-60 species of this plant, going from ground cover to 70-80ft tall!

The way to tell the difference between male and female is easy - the male plant produces roundish, yellowish cones and the female produces spherical, fleshy, berry-like fruits (the raspberry like fruits that you observed?)

I can't think of another plant that has the leaf structure you describe, plus fleshy fruits.

I do hope that this information helps and you are able to replace your lost plant.

Gill
