QuestionDo your know anything about the mimosa pudica. If so I would like to know what soil it needs needs and any other helpful advice your can give to me. thanks
AnswerHello Clara
Mimosa pudica comes in two forms - a mat forming bushy annual or a short-lived perennial (in which case it is evergreen).
It has slender, well branched prickly stems and leaves which can be bright green or grayish green. They fold up when they're touched giving Mimosa the common name 'the Sensitive Plant', for that reason. The pink or lilac colored flowers are produced throughout the summer.
If you live in a frost free area Mimosa can be planted outside in any moderately fertile soil in full sun, though they will tolerate light dappled shade.
In areas where winters are frosty, they are best planted in a pot using a loam based compost, and put outside for the summer in an area of dappled shade. Water moderately (though this depends on how hot your summers get, of course!) Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer about once a month during the growing season and not at all in the winter - also cut right down on the watering when you take the plant inside for the winter.
Indoors, red spider mite can be a problem, so be sure to mist the plant occasionally to keep the humidity level up. (Red spider mite thrive in a very dry atmosphere).
In winter or early spring prune out any wayward or damaged stems to keep the plant a nice neat shape.
