Pruning crepe myrtles

Question
We have a crepe myrtle that is getting really tall, but is also growing out at the bottom. My husband said he would like to get rid of the lower branches to let it continue to grow up. What is the best way and time to do it and how tall should we let it get?

Answer
Hello Tammy

Thank you for your very interesting question.

Your husband could certainly remove the lower branches of the myrtle and make a very stately tree!  As to height - you choose!  The only advice I would give concerning height is if the plant is in a spot where it catches the wind don't let it get so high that it whips around violently - it could break!

When - Late winter to early spring when the plant is in its dormant state.

How - Use a good pruning blade on branches up to 2 - 2.5 inches diameter and a sharp saw on larger branches.  First cut off about 1/2 to 2/3 of the branch to reduce the weight and prevent tearing at the trunk and then remove the rest of the branch as close to the trunk as possible.  Do this by making a cut under the branch first and then cutting down to it from above - this will also reduce tearing.  Tidy up any raggedy bits with a clean, sharp gardening knife.  Then sit back and admire your handywork!
