QuestionI have a Limelight hydrangea shrub that was planted June 18,2009. The shrub is flowering and appears to be growing, but the leaves are turning yellow. What is causing this problem? the shrubs are watered daily. We recently had fescue sod laid so,the shrubs are getting plenty of water.
AnswerHello Niki
Thank you for your letter.
Hydrangea 'Limelight' is a panticulata type (in fact a new introduction from the Netherlands) - they are very easy to grow and very difficult to kill!
Hydrangeas like a well drained, moisture retentive soil, so a good soaking at the time of planting to settle the plant in and then watering once a week should be enough for your new plant in its first year. I think the problem may be that you are over-watering your plant! More plants are killed by over-watering than by under-watering! SO - give it a rest for a while!
If you get a long period of dry weather then you can water more freely, in the first year - after that they should (mostly) be able to take care of themselves.
As long as you followed the planting advice given on the label, or by the seller, then your Hydrangea should be OK.
