non blooming oleanders

Question
I live just northwest of Houston and I have 4 oleanders--all planted in full sun for last three years--all were in full bloom when brought, but have not bloomed since. I have fertilized them each month with miracle grow since late spring and also put force bloom fertilizer down twice in 3 week intervals. One did produce a few flowers but the other three don't even have buds. otherwise the plants look very healthy and are growing. We have received a lot of rain this year. Other plants around them are doing great. The wild oleanders in area are in full bloom and beautiful. I did trim the tops of all last year, because they were very tall and thin and this year they have filled out.

Answer
Diane,

I think with the monthly fertilization, you are forcing top growth at the expense of flowering. These plants should be fertilized only twice a year.

I would also recommend pruning them back hard next spring. Oleanders bloom on new wood, so by pruning them in the early spring, you will be promoting bud set.

Good luck,
Ed Gulliksen
