gardenia

Question
I planted 2 gardenia shrubs that are approx. 12-14 in high in my yard, I live in N.C.  They appeared to be doing very well the first two weeks and then I noticed the leaves were starting to turn yellow. I tried backing off on the watering, however they are continuing to yellow and appear dry. Do I water or not, and is this even the problem? - Thanks, nancy

Answer
Nancy,

The yellowing may be due to several different problems.

I would first have you check the plants for any insect activity. There are three insects that you should look for- White flies, scales and aphids. If you find any insect, I would recommend treating them with a general insecticide.

There could also be a problem with the drainage in the area. Check to see that water is not puddling up around the plants causing root damage. If there is puddling, cut back on the water to improve drainage conditions.

The last possibility is that they gone into transplant shock.

No matter what the cause, I would recommend fertilizing the plants to improve their overall health.

Good luck,
Ed Gulliksen
