QuestionHi Edward,
I have just read your answer to
http://en.allexperts.com/q/Shrubs-735/Weeping-Higan-Cherry-Wilting.htm
I have the very same problem. I have a weeping cherry in a pretty well drained location and while I did not notice any bugs eating away at it, the leaves seem to be wilting and yellowing and I have no idea why. I put a fertilizer spike in about two weeks ago and actually notices the wilting since then. The tree was doign fine before that.
Could the fertilizer spike have caused the wilting? Also my cherry is in full sun, but I have an irrigation system to ensure adequate moisture. Please help if you can.
Thanks,
Anna
AnswerAnna,
If the wilting began after the introduction of the fertilizer spike, I would have to say that it may have contributed to the problem. I feel that the main problem could be that the tree may not be getting enough water.
Most sprinkler systems are set to water lawns, not trees whcih require more water over a longer time period. Your trees should be being watered slowly and deeply. Supplement the sprinkler with a hose laid at the base of the tree if the soil 2 inches under is dry. Leave it trickle for a few hours until the tree stsrts to respond. Do this several times a week.
Good luck,
