QuestionI have 30 wintergreen boxwoods outlining our property. We planted them last year and over the winter I believe some of them were damaged from salt. A couple we have completely lost, some are perfectly fine, and a number of them have yellowed branches that are clearly dead. How do I save the plants that have half yellow branches and half green? Can I just cut out the bad branches? How far do I cut? And is there any way to protect my plants this coming winter?
AnswerChrystal,
I would recommend fertilizing the plants heavily to encourage new growth. Water the plants heavily to wash the salts through the soil to stop further damage.
This fall, I would recommend erecting a burlap barrier on the road side of the plants to minimize the salt spray from the sanders.
Good luck,
