can an arborvite be trimmed  and still look OK or will it lose its shape as it is overgrown in its particular area of the yard

Yes, Arborvitae can be sheared if they are growing too large for the area that they planted in. I would caution you to be creful how much you take off. If you cut past the last green growth on the branch, you will be killing that branch.
