QuestionHow should I plant holly shrubs in clay soil?
AnswerRhonda,
Hollies do best in well drained soil, so if you are going to plant them in a clay soil I would recommend making the hole 2-3 times larger than the root balls and back filing with a good quality organic topsoil. This will provide a suitable growing medium for the roots and also help to improve the soil texture in the general area. Watch your watering practices, do not overwater as this could lead to drowning the roots due to the slow perculation of the underlying clay.
Good luck,
