Gardenia bush and aphid damage

Question
QUESTION: We have a huge gardenia bush in the back yard that was ragaged by aphids last year.  We had no idea what they were and by the time we did it was almost too late.  Miraculously, the bush has leaves and small buds are forming but you can tell it's not in great shape.  Is it a lost cause or is there a way we can help it to come back to its full beauty?  Thank you for any help!
ANSWER: Annie,

I would recommend a good fertilization this spring and spraying for the aphids. Keep the plant well watered and it should recover fins.

Good luck,

QUESTION: Thank you so much, Ed.  Do you have a recommend for the type of fertilizer and frequency of use?  This is very new me us and the bush us almost 30 years old (that's our understanding)  It stands over 6' high and is about 10' long...3'deep.  We live in southeast North Carolina.  I appreciate your help!  Any pruning advice?

Answer
Annie,

Your welcome. I think the best way to answer your question would be to have you read the fact sheet on the Clemson University site. Go to http://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheets/HGIC1065.htm. This will answer all your questions.

Good luck,
Ed Gulliksen
