I have a sticky substance on the leaves of my acer plant. Can you tell me what it is and how to treat it?

The sticky substance is most probably honey dew from either scale or aphid feeding. Treat the plant with horticultural soap or oil. Make sure to spray the undersides of the leaves and the branches. You can find these products at your local garden center.
