QuestionI dug up an planted a dogwood tree from the woods behind our home,it was 2 feet tall now it is 5 feet tall never has bloomed and never has had any red buds, I put another in the same area and it has bloomed ever sense. Why won't the first one bloom they both have plenty of sun and water. Please help. Also are the male and female how do you tell if the all bloom?
AnswerJudy,
First things first, Dogwoods are an understory tree- that is they prefer filtered sunlight or partial shade to direct sunlight. This is a common mistake made by many homeowners and landscapers.
As for the not blooming, it sounds like the tree has put most of it's energy into upward growth. I would recommend fertilizing it with a low nitrogen fertilizer to slow down top growth and redirecting the energy into flower and root production.
Good luck,
