QuestionI have 2 questions: I have what I think is a holly bush (stays green year round, has red berries). Late last year, I noticed that some leaves had brown spots, then turned completely brown. This year, it seems the whole tree is turning this way. Most of the leaves are gone. What could this be? Also, will trimming the bottom limbs off hurt or kill it?
AnswerDonna,
Many evergreens were damaged during the winter of '06-'07, this sounds like the holly was damaged as well. With a little care you can revive it. Ferilize this spring using a balanced fertilizer to encourage new growth.
As for pruning the bottom limbs, you can raise it up, but be aware that the plant will not grow new limbs in this area.
Good luck,
