QuestionI have 15 four year old loropetalums around my front porch with 14 compata boxwoods. They are growing so fast that I have to cut them back two to three times a year. They are beautiful and I don't want to loose them but, I have no alterative but to move them away from the house. They are now 3-4 ft. high and almost as wide. When should I try to move them? Does the root system grow very deep and spread? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
AnswerRena,
I would recommend waiting until mid to late Fall before undertaking this move. Fertilize them a few weeks before to enhance their nutient storage and dig out as much of the root system as possible. Their roots will extend at least twice as far as the branches and will grow down 12 to 15 inches (maybe more). Make sure to keep them well watered after moving them.
Good luck,
