Question
We are buying privet shrubs (no I don't know the species),where is the best place to put them? Would having the privet shrub abutting the house damage our house?  (roots)and if not abutting the house would the drive way be better?

Privets can be used almost anywhere. Their root systems aren't invasive, so they can be planted against the house, but they are mostly used to form a hedge. When you get them, try them in different spots before planting them, you may find that you like one location over another.
