QuestionI live in Northwest Ohio, and have pair of large bushes in front of our porch. They have been there for a long time, but are overgrown. I would like to keep them, but want to keep them from growing over the sidewalk that runs in front of them (currently hanging about a foot over the walk). If I cut hem back past the green foliage will it ever grow back?
AnswerTom,
It all depends on the type of shrub they are. Some evergreens, like yews, will tolerate severe pruning, and will in time replace the foliage. Junipers and cedars will not tolerate this type of pruning. Have the plants identified at your local nursery or cooperative extension to determine what the plants are before you do any extensive pruning.
Good luck.
