QuestionOur Holly bushes in the front of the house had become so overgrown it was starting to look like no one lived here anymore. They also are prone to a white insect infestation that I control with a chemical spray. So now we cut them down to just the wood, all greenery pruned. I think we have been too severe. Will they regenerate?
AnswerV,
I have seen hollies regrow from drastic prunings, but it will take a few years. The white insect that you saw was holly scale and is easily controled using horticultural oil treatments in the spring, fall and during the crawler stage, usually around June- July.
I would recommend fertilizing the shrubs this fall and again in the spring to try to speed up the regrowth process. Use a balanced fertilizer for both feedings.
Good luck.
