boxwood hedge

Question
A section of my boxwood hedge has developed a fungus on the bark that is killing the plant. The hedge is at least 25 years old. Is there a fugicide I can use to stop this? Rick Billera, Alpha NJ

Answer
Rick,
The only disease tht I am aware of that would attak the bark is canker. This disease would cause the bark to sink and split.
It is more likely that the "disease" that you are seeing, is actually mealybug or scale. These insects are white and fluffy and can be confused for disease. To control these pests, treat the bark with horticultural oil and fertilize the plants to strengthen them.
Good luck.
