Questioncould you explain about the different types of arborvite (which grow fastest, widest, stay skinny, etc) thank you
AnswerBruce,
We will start with Thuja occidentalis, the eastern arborvitae or white cedar. They have scale like leaves 1/12" long, flat bright green in color, oblong cones 1/3" to 1/2" long, slow tp medium growth rate, bark is grayish brown to reddish brown, 40'-60' in height, 10'- 15' in width.
Thuja orientalis, the oriental arborvitae has slightly smaller leaves than the eastern arborvitae and are bright yellow-green, cones are 3/4" long and green with horn like hooks, slow to medium growth rate, grows 18'- 25' tall and 10'- 15' wide.
Thuja plicata, the giant (western) arborvitae has scale like leaves up to 1/4" long, dark green during the summer, cones are 1/2" long, green in summer and brown in winter, slow to medium growth rate (although ther are a few cultivars that have fast growth rates), bark is cinnamon red to red brown, grows 50'-70' high by 15'-25' wide.
I hope this helps.
Good luck.
