QuestionWe've had a tupidanthus for approximately 15 years. Recently, we recieved a call from our neighbor with a complaint that the roots have overgrown into their backyard. Is it necessary to remove the tree for safety reasons? Will it affect underwater piping or the foundations of the house?
AnswerSandy,
No matter what variety of tree you are talking about, roots invading cracks in foundations or getting into sewer or water pipes is a problem. You do not necessarally need to remove the offending tree.
I would recommend root pruning and having a root barrier installed around the tree or at the property line. A root barrier is a heavy gauge plastic wall that is dug 2-3 feet into the ground. This barrier will reflect the roots away from the neighbors yard. Call a local Arborist for prices.
Good luck.
