QuestionI live in michigan. This seems to be a great growing season this year and my weeping cherry tree has grown out of control. The tree was trimmed last year. The tree is about 5 years old and seems to be doing well. When can I trim it back without doing damage? Should I trim at the top along with cutting off the length of the branches.
AnswerCathy,
I would recommend that whenever you prune a tree you do the whole tree. Thinning is recommended to improve air flow through the crown and increase disease resistance.
When you prune, do not use hedge trimmers on the tree, this method does damage to the leaves and branches that are remaining. Hand pruners will allow you pick and choose the branches you wish to eliminate and pruning by hand will give you a more natural look.
Good luck.
