Japanese Yew

Question
Edward, I have two Japanese Yews at teh entry of my house.  i do not think too much or too little sun is teh issue, but they have turned brown fast.  I am not sure if it is too much or too little water.  One is dying from the back as it is 75% dean and starting to wrap to teh front.  I have drip lines into them but have since pulled them out as I thought maybe too much water.  Do they need much water?

Answer
Mike,
Yews are one of the plants that are suseptible to root rot and what is known as wet feet from too water.
Were the yews moved or dug up in the past few months? or are they newly planted? If they were moved or a new transplant, they are suffering from transplant shock. They may need to be cut back severly to spark rejuvination growth.
Is there bricks or white stones on the wall behind the plants? These types of housing faces redirect heat from the sun onto plants and cause them to decline.
How is the soil- is it clay or topsoil? Does it hold water or allow it to drain in a reasonable amount of time?
Try fertilizing them with a high phosphorous low nitrogen fertilizer to stabilize them. Water once or twice a week for 30 minutes maximum.
Good luck.
